My name is Mataoe Nevils and I work to create a safe spaces that center intentional harm reduction, healing, and community wellness for trans and gender-expansive individuals.

They/Them

As an advocate and educator, my goal is to support cultural change and awareness around health care, mental health, and the expression of sexuality for trans sex workers.

Mataoe is a Multi-Hyphenated Human who serves their communities in many forms; from advocate to educator and everything in between.

Mataoe is a passionate advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, wearing many hats to serve their needs. Their journey began in 2018 after completing their degree, diving into health advocacy, community wellness, and clinical support. Witnessing the gap in care for transgender and gender-expansive individuals, particularly regarding mental health, sex work, and sex worker rights, fueled Mataoe's dedication.

Balancing a corporate career with their background in mental health care has given Mataoe a unique perspective. They champion the need for progressive corporate policies, cultural shifts in healthcare, and comprehensive education on sexuality and sexual identity. Their impactful work was recently recognized by Decriminalize Sex Work in a feature article.

Mataoe's voice has resonated on panels for organizations like NYTAG (New York Transgender Awareness Group), Decriminalize Sex Work, and even VICE, raising awareness about transgender issues and the specific challenges faced by transgender men. Their work consistently centers the experiences and stories of Black transgender and Black queer communities.

Harm reduction is not just about using correct pronouns, it has to be engrained within the culture of your organization.
